I’m going through the end of a relationship that lasted most of my adult life.
We were together for nearly seventeen years. We grew up together, moved countries together, built a home, got married, and created a life that I genuinely believed would be ours for the rest of our lives.
And then it wasn’t. In one single moment – a sentence piercing through my reality, it just all ended.
The separation has been incredibly painful, but also strange in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve had to learn how to make decisions without thinking in terms of “we.” I’ve had to reclaim spaces, routines, plans, and even parts of myself that had become intertwined with another person. Some days I grieve what we had. Some days I’m angry about what happened. And increasingly, there are days when I feel something else: freedom.
I’m starting to build a life that belongs entirely to me. I don’t know exactly what that life will look like yet. But for the first time in a very long time, I’m realizing that I get to find out. It’s terrifying, yet freeing.
